Meet J. J. Ament, Republicans'
Top Choice for State Treasurer
Focused on Sound Fiscal Policy
J. J. Ament would be the first State Treasurer in Colorado in more than 40 years who has a professional background in finance and banking. Now more than ever, we need his financial leadership in the Capitol.
For ten years, J. J. has worked in the private sector as a financial advisor and investment banker to state treasurers and other government CFOs from all over the United States. He began his public finance career at George K. Baum & Company, before moving to UBS PaineWebber, and finally Citigroup Public Finance (the #1 public finance firm in the United States.) J. J. is the only candidate with securities licenses for Series 7 (general securities), Series 63 (state laws), and Series 53 (municipal supervision & management).
During his career, J. J. has helped implement innovative and effective financial strategies in the communities he’s served – frequently saving millions for taxpayers. Equally important, he has seen what can happen to taxpayers and budgets when policy makers choose poor financial strategies, expose their citizens to inappropriate risks, or perpetuate financial neglect because “that’s the way we did it last year.”
J. J. will manage our State Treasury based on sound, conservative fiscal policy – not politics – regardless of which party holds legislative majorities.
Deep Colorado Roots
A 5th-generation native of Colorado, J. J. Ament was born and raised on the plains of Northeast Colorado in Logan County. J. J. developed a strong work ethic growing up on his family’s farm & ranch and a deep sense of community living in rural Colorado. These values were strengthened by a decade of involvement in 4-H, the largest youth development organization in America.
As a student at Caliche High School J. J. became involved in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), the largest association for business students in the world, and would later serve as the organization’s Colorado, then national president.
J. J. went on to attend the University of Colorado at Boulder where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance.
An Entrepreneur
As a college student in the Presidents Leadership Class, J. J. founded his own small business: POLITI-CO. The company remains in business today. J. J. has hired employees, been a Pinnacol Assurance policy holder (work-comp insurance), was an NFIB member, dealt with payroll taxes, business personal property taxes, sales tax management, and a host of other regulatory issues applied by government to small business owners.
Serving Colorado
J. J. served the people of Colorado in the office of then-Congressman Wayne Allard in Washington, D.C. reporting directly to the chief of staff. Then he worked for Congressman Scott McInnis’ Washington office assisting with the constituent needs of the Western Slope of Colorado.
As a banking professional, J. J. has assisted the State of Colorado with numerous projects. He worked with the Department of Transportation to consolidate their real estate holdings. He helped with the financing of projects at Colorado State University in Fort Collins and Pueblo, the University of Colorado's Anschutz Medical Campus at Fitzsimons and was the senior banker for the state’s $231 million investment in higher education projects in 2008.
Fighting for Rural Colorado
Earlier in his career, J. J. represented the interests of farmers across Colorado as the Executive Director of the Colorado Association of Wheat Growers. In this capacity he represented the growers of a half-billion dollars in annual wheat production, most of which is exported to other nations. He is a member today of the Colorado Farm Bureau.
A Voice for the Business Community
J. J. understands the unique issues that face the business community. As Director of Public Affairs for the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, J. J. worked with business owners, community leaders and elected officials to create a healthy economic environment in the Denver metro area and statewide.
Community Service
J. J. has served on numerous boards and advisory councils in Colorado. He currently serves on the Board of Freedom Service Dogs, an organization that rescues and trains dogs to assist people with disabilities. This organization has received national recognition for its work assisting returning veterans from Iraq & Afghanistan. J. J. also sits on the board of Angel Eyes, formerly the Colorado SIDS Program, the only organization in Colorado dedicated to helping families who have experienced the sudden and unexpected death of an infant or toddler, and supporting SIDS research.
Clubs and Associations
J. J. is a life member of the National Western Stock Show Association, the Denver Agricultural & Livestock Club, the University of Colorado Alumni Association and the Professional Division of Future Business Leaders of America.
He is an active member of the South Suburban Christian Church, where he’s served as Vice President and President of the Congregation. He is a former chairman of the Colorado Municipal Bond Dealers Association, and is a graduate of the civic programs Leadership Denver and 50 for Colorado.
