Residents trade dialogue with state, congressional candidates

Craig Daily Press

Ament spoke of his appreciation and understanding of rural Colorado, background in public finance, and specific issues he wants to address if elected.

“The government should take a lesson from rural Colorado,” he said. “They’re spendthrift, work hard and everyone helps each other out.”

Republican candidates for state treasurer differentiate themselves at joint forum

Colorado Statesman

Ament said he’s running as the only candidate with experience in public finance. He touts his record from the last ten years working as a financial consultant to numerous state treasurers across the country, including Colorado’s Kennedy.

“We need somebody in there who has the experience and the knowledge of dealing in government finances, dealing in private sector finances, who can get our state back on the right track fiscally because there are needs to be met and they’re not being met right now,” Ament said, adding that he would be the first treasurer in 40 years with a career background in finance.

GOP candidates for treasurer square off

Colorado Community Newspapers Online

In a closely watched midterm election, especially with a highly contested race for governor, the treasurer’s election usually runs at a low profile. But the three Republican candidates were determined to distinguish themselves for about 30 south metro business leaders.

Ament emphasized his financial resume. He said, if elected, he would become Colorado’s first treasurer in 40 years to have a background in finance, and in Ament’s case, a specific track record with government investments.

As a banker, Ament said he has assisted the State of Colorado with numerous projects. His Web site touts his work to consolidate the Department of Transportation’s real estate holdings and his role two years ago advising the state’s investments in higher-education projects.

“That’s what we need to do to fix the treasury — to put somebody in there who actually knows how governments finance their operations, who’s had that experience, not just in Colorado, but in other states as well,” he said.

Ament, endorsed by former Gov. Bill Owens, a onetime state treasurer, said his clients have included elected treasurers and other government-finance officials across the United States.
